Starting guard Joshua Langford only played thirteen games before lacking the rest of the season with a foot damage. The season marked the last time MSU would not end with a successful document. The Michigan State Spartans basketball staff has two goals this season that we know of. Michigan State has won six Big Ten Tournament championships since its inception in 1998, probably the most championships in the Big Ten. The Spartans have appeared in seven championship games, only losing the 2015 championship to Wisconsin.
As the No. 2 seed within the NCAA Tournament, the groups twenty second straight appearance in the Tournament, the Spartans defeated Bradley and Minnesota to advance to their first Sweet Sixteen in four years. In the Sweet Sixteen, the Spartans blew out No. three seed LSU to face top-seeded Duke in the Elite Eight. Despite having a number of first round NBA Draft picks, the Spartans knocked off the Blue Devils to earn a trip to the college's tenth Final Four and eighth beneath Izzo. The win over Duke improved Izzo's record to 2–11 in opposition to Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski.
